Plot Outline: Mary
Draper Ingles is twenty-three years old
when the conflict known as the French
and Indian War begins. Shawnee warriors
raid the settlement of Draper's Meadows;
Mary, her young children, her
sister-in-law, and Henry Lenard survive
the attack but are taken as captives to
"the Ohio Country." Mary escapes and
endures a harrowing journey through
hundreds of miles of wilderness as she
follows the Ohio, Kanawha, and New
Rivers homeward.
